Our Monthly Meeting Program (2nd Thursday of the month)
22 January 2012 (Sunday)For our January meeting we have organised a visit to the Collingwood Children's farm at the VAA beekeeping centre. Time: 10am to 3pm at Collingwood Children’s Farm beekeeping centre. Location: Melways 2D- D10 Car parking is at the Helliers St carpark costing $4 in gold coins for the day. There is no charge for entry to the beekeeping centre at the farm. Follow the bike path from the gateway in St Helliers Road to the beekeeping compound. Please bring along your suits, gloves, boots and a picnic lunch/drink etc and any interesting food item you would like to share with others. There is always something to learn on this social day, help with the beehive inspections and view the display caravan. The day will consist of inspecting the VAA hives with a VAA beekeeper conducting opening of each of the hives. We will be able to participate and the VAA beekeeper will explain what is happening, how to open a hive, what to look for etc. The day provides excellent experience in getting your hands into beehives with the help of an experienced beekeeper. Children are welcome to attend. There is the display caravan to interest them and if they can borrow a suit & gloves, they are welcome to view the beehives. For further details contact Carole on 0411 481 562.
9 February 2012Our guest speaker for this month will be an DPI inspector talking on the effects of the Varroa mite has had in America and how they are dealing with the problem. It will be a good eye opener as to the precautions and control methods that we in Australia are likely to adopt if this mite reaches our shores.
